How to make async videos people actually finish

A video message replaces a meeting only if people watch it to the end and know what you need from them. These are the habits that make that happen.

By the Bujua team. Updated . 2 minute read.

In short: Keep it under three minutes, say what you need in the first ten seconds, show rather than describe, end with one clear question, and check the viewer insights before you follow up.

The ask goes first

A video that opens with the reason it was sent works well: “I need a yes or no on the onboarding change by Thursday.” Viewers then watch everything else with that question in mind. Context first and the ask at the end is how videos get abandoned at the halfway point.

Short videos with one topic each

Two to three minutes is the sweet spot for most messages. If you have three topics, send three videos. Short videos get watched sooner, and comments stay attached to the right subject.

Showing works better than describing

If you find yourself saying “and then you click the thing on the left”, stop and click it. Point with your cursor. The whole advantage over a written message is that people can see what you mean.

Videos that can be skimmed

  • Title it with the outcome: “Activation dropped 6 points after the new onboarding” beats “Weekly update”.
  • Let chapters do the work: pause briefly between sections so automatic chapters split cleanly.
  • Assume it’s watched on mute: captions are on by default for many people, so speak clearly and avoid “this” without showing what “this” is.

End with one question

Close with the decision you need and when. Viewers can answer with a comment pinned to the moment, or a quick video reply.

Follow-ups based on data, not guesses

Before nudging someone, check whether they’ve watched and how far they got. If everyone stopped at the same minute, that part needs rework, not a reminder.

Questions

How long should an async video be?

Two to three minutes for most messages. Walkthroughs and lessons can be longer if they have chapters.

Should I edit async videos?

Rarely. Trimming the start and end is usually enough. Polish matters less than speed and clarity.

The next explanation can be a two minute video.

The first one needs no account and no install, and the link is ready when recording stops.
